Three top plena musicians led by Hector "Tito" Matos are integrated into Miguel Zenon's jazz quartet.  Puerto Rican saxophonist Zenon, a MacArthur "genius" grant and Guggenheim winner, used some of his grant money to research plena for several years in preparation for this project.  The resulting album, "Esta Plena" generated two Grammy nominations.  I personally have heard the album and find it ancestral and electrifying, a beautiful conversation between plena and jazz.

Born and raised in San Juan, sax phenom Zenon has won Guggenheim and MacArthur grants for linking classic jazz with the pulsing syncopations of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American folk — part of his effort to reimagine jazz for the twenty-first century. His barnstorming quartet is joined by three master pleneros, back-country troubadours who sing like history depends on it.

Miguel Zenon, alto sax
Luis Perdomo, piano
Hans Glawischnig, bass
Henry Cole, drums
Hector “Tito” Matos, lead vocals & percussion
Juan Gutierrez , vocals & percussion
Obanilu Allende, vocals & percussion
